Are Microplastics Really “Killing Your Gut”? What the Studies Actually Measured
A viral headline said you eat a credit card’s worth of plastic every week and it’s wrecking your gut. Here’s where that number came from, why the science behind it is shakier than the panic suggests — and what the evidence genuinely shows.
Verdict: C Microplastic exposure is real and universal, and early human gut data show measurable microbiome shifts. But the most alarming figures — “a credit card a week,” “a spoonful in your brain” — rest on weak methods and extrapolations, and no study has yet shown microplastics cause gut disease in people. The honest position: worth reducing exposure, not worth panic.
The headline that started it
In early 2025 a tabloid ran a line that traveled everywhere: “You’re eating a credit card’s worth of plastic a week — and it’s killing your gut.” It’s a perfect piece of internet nutrition writing: a vivid object, a body part everyone worries about, and an implied emergency. It’s also two claims stacked on top of each other, and both deserve a closer look before you reorganize your kitchen out of fear.
This guide separates what’s been measured from what’s been estimated, and estimated from imagined. That distinction is the whole story with microplastics.
Claim 1: “A credit card of plastic a week”
The 5-grams-a-week figure traces back to a 2019 WWF-commissioned analysis (later published by Senathirajah and colleagues in 2021), which estimated weekly human microplastic intake by combining particle counts from shellfish, salt, beer and water with typical consumption amounts.1 Five grams happens to be roughly the mass of a credit card — a comparison that made the number unforgettable.
Two things get lost in the meme. First, 5 g was the top of a range. The same analysis produced a spread of roughly 0.1–5 g per week; the low end is about 50 times smaller than the headline.2 Even one of the study’s own co-authors has said the data were assembled from non-standard methods and reported in non-standard units, which is exactly why they had to give a range instead of a single number.2
Second, the math has been formally challenged. A 2022 critique in the Journal of Hazardous Materials Letters re-ran the calculation and concluded it mixed particle-count and particle-mass data in a way that overstates intake by several orders of magnitude.3 Independent estimates using more consistent methods land far lower — on the order of a few micrograms per week, not grams.4
The inhaled version fares no better. Fact-checkers working from the underlying air-sampling data estimated that reaching a credit card’s mass by breathing alone would take on the order of 3,000 years.5 When a claim needs three millennia to become literally true, it isn’t really a weekly claim.
Claim 2: “A spoonful of plastic in your brain”
The other headline of 2025 came from a Nature Medicine study (Nihart et al.) reporting microplastics in human liver, kidney and brain tissue, with the brain showing the highest concentrations — which some outlets rounded up to “a spoon’s worth.”6 It’s a striking result, and it should be taken seriously. It should also be read with the caveats the scientific literature immediately attached to it.
A formal Matters Arising response published in the same journal flagged limited contamination controls and a lack of validation steps, and warned that these could affect how reliable the reported concentrations are.7 Independent experts raised a more basic point about the core method, pyrolysis gas chromatography–mass spectrometry: it works by incinerating the sample and reading the chemical signature of the vapor, which means it cannot tell you the size, shape, or number of particles that were actually there — only that polymer-like carbon was detected.8 Several reviewers stressed the findings need independent replication before anyone extrapolates to health effects.8
Why measuring microplastics is genuinely hard
This is the part that rarely makes headlines but explains most of the confusion. Plastic is everywhere in a laboratory — in the air, the labware, the reagents, even the researchers’ clothing. Detecting a few micrograms of it inside a tissue sample without accidentally measuring the room is a real technical problem, and the field is still standardizing how to do it.
- Contamination. Studies of “blank” control samples routinely pick up plastic particles from the environment, which means without rigorous controls a study can measure its own lab rather than the patient.7
- Destructive detection. Methods that quantify plastic by mass (like Py-GC–MS) destroy the particles, so they can’t confirm the particles were the right size — or, in some cases, distinguish plastic-derived carbon from natural biological molecules.8
- Extrapolation. Turning a handful of measured foods into a whole-diet weekly total requires assumptions that can swing the answer by orders of magnitude — the exact failure behind the credit-card number.3
None of this means microplastics aren’t in us. They are — detection in blood, placenta and gut tissue is well documented.9 It means the quantities in the scariest headlines are the least trustworthy part of the science.
So what do we actually know about microplastics and the gut?
Here’s where a debunk has to stay honest: the alarming numbers are inflated, but the underlying concern about the gut is not made up. This is the most active and credible frontier of the research.
A 2025 systematic review in BMC Gastroenterology pooled a dozen human-relevant studies and found a fairly consistent pattern: microplastic exposure tracked with reduced microbial diversity, fewer beneficial short-chain-fatty-acid-producing bacteria, and markers suggesting a weaker intestinal barrier and more inflammation.10 At UEG Week 2025, the microONE project reported the first work using human stool samples grown as lab cultures, where common plastics shifted microbial metabolism and composition.11
But note what these studies are and aren’t. They show associations and lab-culture effects, not proof that microplastics cause disease in living people. A broad 2025 systematic review of human health outcomes put it plainly: the evidence linking microplastics to inflammation and hormone markers is moderate, the evidence for neurological or chronic-disease outcomes is low, and direct causal links to specific diseases remain unestablished.12 Europe’s Federal Institute for Risk Assessment reached a similar bottom line: as of its latest review there is no reliable toxicological evidence of health harm from ingesting microplastics through food.13

The proportionate response
The useful takeaway isn’t “panic” or “it’s all a hoax.” It’s that exposure is universal, the harm is unproven but plausible, and a few low-cost habits cut the biggest known sources without upending your life. Diet quality, fiber, and a diverse microbiome remain far better-evidenced levers for gut health than any anti-plastic ritual.
- Don’t microwave food in plastic; heat is when containers shed the most.14 Use glass or ceramic.
- Cut down on single-use plastic-bottled water where tap or filtered water is safe; bottled water is a notable ingestion source.
- Replace scratched plastic cutting boards and worn non-stick pans.
- Ventilate and dust your home — indoor dust is an underrated exposure route.
- Spend your real effort on the basics that are proven to help the gut: fiber, fermented foods, varied whole foods, sleep.
Skip the detox supplements marketed to “flush microplastics.” There’s no evidence any product removes them from tissue.
